THE ORIGINAL CUSTOM WOOD TONE BOX... "Imitation is the
sincerest form of flattery."
When we get the
chance between builds of our high-end short scale basses & custom guitars, we hand make these
great little tone boxes. It's a variation on the varitone circuit used in our
instruments fitted into a handmade wood enclosure. Every one is different ~ some
are small boxes of various shapes, some are bigger console models ~ but the
circuit is the same.
A six position rotary dial
provides five
distinctly different tones and a bypass setting for every tone you put in.
It is suitable for guitar, bass, or anywhere you wish to try it in your quest
for simple tone coloration.
Clean guitar takes on jazzy
warmth, distorted guitars howl & grind, basses take on tonal personalities
totally different than stock. Completely passive, the Bbox needs no
batteries or plugs - we like to say it's powered by the good vibes of the person
playing through it, so it might work better for some than others!
Each Bbox is hand made here in our Texas "Hill Country" workshop.
The circuit is hand wired, star grounded and copper shielded... and every one is
hand rubbed with our oil finish blend & individually serial numbered.
These are not
"stomp" boxes, but unique tone shaping devices &
works of functional
art for your concert or studio environment. Fantastic for recording ~ have a
wide variety of different tones to play with from a minimum of instruments &
amplifiers. "I've been using the prototype all the time since I built it
in June. I consider it a permanent part of my sonic tool arsenal now,
especially for guitar."

"I love my Bbox! Played with my guitar last night, which was a
blast. Played and played and thought about it all day long today.
Tonight I tried it with a bass I'm borrowing and Line6 Lowdown amp. I'm
so excited because turning to the little peace sign produced a startling
acoustic upright bass sound...just could not believe it!!! I didn't
touch any amp settings either night. My husband is playing right now and
making some gorgeous noise with Bbox #3 and his Variax. I told him I'd
like to get some Bboxes for Christmas presents. He said, " Aw, I
have to wait for Christmas?" This would also be tons of fun for my
two sons and for my brother, so I'd like 4 more please!"
"I LOVE IT! The Bbox is AMAZING. It truly adds 5 distinct
tones that all sound SO SWEET.
Thanks for making them!"
"After 24 hours of working with the BBox, it
has not only amazed me, but made me fifty bucks as well! After working
with it for some time last night, our lead guitarist pointed out the
clear negative about the box was in it not having a DC adapter built
into it. Well, the discussion became quite animated with him finally
betting fifty bucks that a box capable of altering the tone of an
instrument that much had to have DC power in to continue being that
effective as batteries alone would not allow it to last very long.
Well... a few turns of the screwdriver and I ended up with the Bbox for
half price.
(A Bbox has no batteries - it's completely
passive.)
Tonight the guitarist in my other band called it a spirit
box. I agree. It's hard to believe the degree the six positions of that
knob can alter the tone of a guitar, or bass."

Natural wood tone boxes by
Birdsong
Hand made in Wimberley, Texas
I'm just dropping a note to tell you how
happy I am with my B-Box (#19).
I've been using it for studio demo
& master sessions since I bought it last May. I actually
work with a producer who insists I bring it to every session!
He likes to have it on the console so he can dial it in. Even
if it doesn't get used, at least it is totally invisible when in
bypass.
It is really amazing how it can change
the tone subtly, yet substantially. On a master session last
night (where the producer and engineer were rather picky), the B-Box
saved my life! It can tweak the tone to get things "just
right".
I do have to say. that in my
experience, the B-Box works a lot better with passive
pickups. My active basses don't sound much different until I
dial it up to the more extreme (last 2) settings. It's still
well worth the price just for the passive basses, however!
Thanks again for a great little unit.
It is apparent how detail oriented Birdsong is just in this simple
device.
Thanks,
Justin
