4C-002 Cortobass Standard Mahogany with chrome hardware & black control plate CALIFORNIA "WOW! I could sleep next to my amp. I could discern no noise related to whether or not I was touching the strings (which is still the case with the Fender). At comparable output levels, the Birdsong was noticeably quieter." "The balance is impeccable. I've never strapped on a bass that didn't have some headstock heaviness until now. My left hand no longer has to help prop up the guitar while I play. I'm sure that will take some stress out of my shoulder as well." Millard Former Mustang player. Read his in-depth review here. This bass is also reviewed on Harmony-Central. Update: Millard also now owns Cortobass #20 and has reserved #200! |

4C-003 Cortobass Standard Mahogany with chrome hardware & tortoise control plate From the Harmony-Central review of this bass. I have noticed that I don't have to tune the bass nearly as often as any other bass I've owned. It also generally seems well-built. It sounds a lot better than a Fender active or passive that I have owned. It sounds better than my Yamaha, or my 1960s EBO. Customer Support: 10 Dealing with the company was a breeze! The company owners managed to get it to me before Christmas, when I knew I was ordering it during the busiest time of the year. The owners even gave me their cell phone number so that I could call them to let them know that the bass had arrived! Overall Rating: 10 When I received the Birdsong, I gave away my Fender to a friend who is just learning to play... |

4C-005 Cortobass Standard Blackwashed Mahogany with gold hardware & black control plate TEXAS I'm very impressed with the Cortobass. As I read from other testimonies from owners of the Cortobass, I must agree with them in the smoothness of the feel of the neck... the sounds that one can create are numerous and pleasing to the ear. The guys I'm playing with can hear the difference in the Corto and the Fender bass I used to play and now is retired in my closet. The look of the Corto ranks up there with the most expensive of guitars. Today I showed the Cortobass to (a local music store)... (they) said there are many short scale basses on the market but the Corto was the best he's ever heard. Another sales worker said the look and sound of the Corto Bass ranks up in the $3000 to $5000 range, which assured me even more about my decision in buying the Cortobass (before you raise the price). 4C-009 Cortobass Standard One awesomely charactered piece of Alder, black hardware & control plate TEXAS Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of Birdsong Guitars. I could not have made a better choice in purchasing the "Cortobass" bass guitar. To tell you the truth, I knew it immediately after seeing the website that I was going to purchase the bass before I even saw it in person. It just seemed so right for me and I know it will be for many other musicians out there. I could go on and on and can't say enough how awesome I think you guys are from your hospitality and kindness to your gifted ability to creating such a beautiful instrument. My confidence as a bass player has shot through the roof and can't wait to show off my new "Cortobass". Know that 4C1-009 has a happy new home and will be well taken care of. I love it!!! Marco |

5C-010 Cortobass Standard Rear routed Alder body Chrome hardware & customer requested features CONNECTICUT You did a real nice job on the bass, I'm really happy with it. It is quite a bit lighter than what I'm used to so it's taking some getting used to. All in all, it's a very nice bass, fits me real well and you've been a pleasure to deal with. I wish this happened 25 years ago when I was slinging that Stingray 5 nights a week. If you run into any need for references I'd be glad give you one. Joe |

5C-011 Cortobass Standard Poplar body with chrome hardware & mint control plate Lightweight special - 6lbs. 4oz. PENNSYLVANIA A final letter of thanks for a job well done. The Cortobass that you built for me is an absolutely sensational treat for all my senses. The feel, the looks, the voice, even the smell is a delight each time that I pick it up and play. I feel like a kid with a new toy that I can’t get enough of. The sound and the range of sounds that I can produce playing this instrument continually amaze me. The sustain is the most powerful of most any bass that I have owned or remember playing. It is a super lightweight, yet has a feeling of roadworthiness that I never experienced before in a lightweight. And its appearance is so unique – the body shape, the head, the colors – ah the colors! The blonds and the hint-of-green tints along with the dark woods work together so complementary. The woodwork and finish is so gorgeous. You are to be complemented as a craftsman, an artist, and an engineer. Your product is of eloquent design, high workmanship, and unmatched performance. To me, it is every bit, and more than advertised! Gene Read his Harmony Central review, too! |

5C-012 Cortobass Standard Blackwashed Mahogany with gold hardware & black control plate FRANCE "The Cortobass is really great, great tone, great sound, great look, you did outstanding work. It is exactly what I expected, the light weight, the smooth feeling of the neck, the woodwork and blackwashed finish, the short scale for my short hands that is truly pleasant for my shoulders!!! I "love" the sustain, the palette of tones... The others guys in my band said it sounds better through the mix than my active Music Man Sterling, that is exactly what I think too. You have built a masterpiece... I am proud to be a Cortobass owner. Thanks again for your labor and your kindness." Christian Read Christian's Cortobass review at Harmony-Central |

5C-014 Cortobass Standard Mahogany with black hardware & black control plate WASHINGTON "My guitar arrived in perfect shape. You did a great job of packing it!! I can't say enough about it. It's more than I expected in every way. Even opening the case for the first time, gave off the sweet aroma of fine woodworking. It aroused all the senses!! The best part of course is the way it is balanced, the silky smooth back of the neck, the size of the neck (all the way up and down), the placement of the jack on the back (optional), the placement of the strap connections, the shape of the body (making it easy to play without tiring) and of course the tone is everything I imagined and more. The sound is so versatile; funk, jazz, rock, country, blues, reggae and any other genre a bass player would ever want are available on your instrument. The wait for my bass was certainly worth it! I practiced with our group last night and they couldn't believe it either!! They were as excited about MY bass as I was and that's hard to do!! You do a wonderful service for music industry!! I can't begin to tell you how much I'm enjoying it!! Thank you again for the fine craftsmanship and playability of my instrument!! If you ever need a reference feel free to use my name. If anyone in the Northwest wants to see a sample of your work have them contact me. I'll be proud to show it off. Thank you again so much!!! As you always say, "Peace, Love and Music". 5C-016 Cortobass Standard Poplar body Vintage bridge ALASKA This gem started its life as the Corto Classic, but went through metamorphosis and became the Cortobass. The pattern on the poplar body has the essence of the tundra and how sweet it is. We are extremely happy with this bass and we think she was waiting for us and we are just elated to bring her home. Hubert I love this Bass Guitar from the moment I played on it and the lightness of it made a joy to play. I like the full bass sound it makes. All of the music we played sounded better... best bass guitar I've ever used to date. Paul (bass player) |

5C-017 Cortobass Standard 5-piece Walnut & Purpleheart body Black hardware & control plate ENGLAND The very good photos do not do Number 17 justice. It is beautiful – everything about Number 17 says care, skill and devotion to the job. It also sound great and plays wonderfully. I catch myself stroking bits of it. I also just stand and look at it with mild disbelief. Caroline says she’ll have to increase my medication and may ask for an assessment. I had never considered a
hand-built instrument. It was your website that won me over: integrity,
passion and a love of what you all do. I had a gut feeling that you would
be great people to deal with. It has been a 100% experience, crowned by
the instrument itself. This all sounds a bit gushing and I don’t gush.
You have a quality business and long may you thrive, whatever you do. There are just too many good things to say about my bass and the experience that went with it. I can’t imagine how good you must feel about yourselves when you turn in at the end of each day. But I don’t understand how you can bear to part with your instruments. RichardRead his review here |

5C-018 THE "1st Anniversary" Cortobass Standard 1-piece rustic Texas Mesquite body Chrome hardware, Rosewood control plate COLORADO I was searching the web for a kids bass, something small as a novelty, but playable. After a week, it was looking like a Daisy Rock or that J Reynolds bass. Then I clicked on a link that was no joke! There on the home page of BirdsongGuitars.Com was Cortobass Standard 5C-018, a one piece Texas Mesquite beauty. This ‘Mesqorto’ bit me and I immediately emailed Scott and Jamie (Birdsong Proprietors) about this fine instrument. It was a real toss up between it and a Super Sweet Walnut Sadhana (6S-002). You might have seen a picture of it in ‘Bass Player’ magazine. However, the Rustic Texas Mesquite won my heart. When the art, I mean, instrument arrived, it was like that scene out of Pulp Fiction when, whoever would open the brief case, the whole room filled with light... only this was an aura of love for music. Then this feeling comes over you... kinda like... well, let’s put it this way. Take the ten most happing, most exciting, most pleasurable experiences in your life until now, multiply that times a million and that best describes it. Whether you are a seasoned pro, (with an extensive collection, know every playing style and have 30 platinum albums hang'n on your wall).,, or you are 6 years old and reading this... Order One! It is truly a unique playing experience. The instrument comes with a seven day approval from the time you receive the tool. Trust me, you won’t be shipping it back! Sound: A seven course meal! Scott had written next to a photo of 5C-018 “I will match the sound against any other short-scale bass in the world”. WELL, he was right,, AWESOME. Sussssstaaaaiiiinnnnn, punch, highs, lows, the whole bouquet. Every color, every flavor. I (BluesJamJim) will match it against ANY BASS in the world, with the exception of another Birdsong Bass. Oh, and this thing is quiet! S/N ratio can not be measured at the line input of my recording devices. Zero, zilch, none. I am sure if I hooked it up to my O’scope I could find some. But I don’t hear any. I am saving up for a Sadhana. (These things are addicting) I don’t think two will be enough either, maybe a bakers dozen. BluesJamJim Read his review here |

5C-021 Cortobass Standard Black & black on Mahogany Special kingfisher woodburning SCOTLAND
Guitar arrived safely today. It's really, really nice!
(Actually, that's a serious understatement, it's unbelievably nice.)
Can't get over the size of it. I've played short scale basses
before (in fact I've got a short scale Fender Jazz) but this is smaller
than that and any I've seen. However, the sound of the Cortobass
is far, far superior and it's so easy to play - I'm in love! (But don't
tell the wife.)

5C-022 Cortobass Standard Rear-routed knotty Maple body with Red Oak & Mahogany center stringers Chrome hardware "Hawkeye" (Cortobass #6C-022) arrived safe and sound, and I have been playing it since 9am this morning! What an amazing axe! It is without a doubt one of the finest, easiest-playing, most versatile-sounding instruments I have ever played (I have 28 other stringed instruments, including a 1920 Gibson F-4 mandolin and four other basses.) Hawkeye can snarl Blues, thump Reggae, slap Funk, walk jazzy, and pound out Classic Rock all with just a few knob tweaks. I ran it through my Line 6 Pod and Hartke 15" Kick Back amp/speaker and it roars! Mike (Mike is a college music teacher!) Read his review here |

5C-023 CortoSupremo 14 different pieces of wood Gold hardware VIRGINIA (We called her the "Rainbow" bass while in production) I have to say that absolutely love this bass. It looks amazing and the tone is unbelievable. Ever since I got the bass I have not been able to stop practicing. I have played the bass for everything from 80's cover bands to funk/r&b and it sounds amazing. I went on a little music store cruise the other day and was playing on basses in a similar price range and I have to say that yours is by far the best. I don't know how you did it, but this bass was made for me. Thank you so much and I am already saving up for when you guys have a fretless... Joshua |

And, in a fit of
human-ness, there wound up being two Cortobasses numbered as 25. The
actual 25th body cut (generally when we serialize them if it's an
inventory build) was one of a beautiful single piece of Swamp Ash during
2005. We commemorated it with a special "25th Cortobass"
woodburned tattoo... but custom orders always bump inventory builds to the
end of the line, and as we were growing out of 2005 it was temporarily
shelved. Meanwhile an order came in from the UK for a Cortobass Standard
in Poplar & chrome. It was built, completed in 2005 as 5C-025, and
shipped to a very happy new owner. Months later in 2006, another future
Cortobass player was led to us and was enthused about a Swamp Ash version,
and so became 6C-025. As it was all coming together, our goof became
apparent. Congrats to you both - not only do you both have great basses,
but interesting pieces of Birdsong history as well. ~Scott 6C-025 Cortobass Standard 1 piece premium Swamp Ash Gold hardware & Flame Maple control plate "25th Cortobass" woodburning on edge MICHIGAN Hi Scott-Love the bass-fantastic. 5C-025 Cortobass Standard Poplar body with chrome hardware GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UK What can I say! Its tiny, but with a huge sound. I used it straight away for a band practice, and the guys said what on earth is that toy bass, but when I played it, actually asked me to turn the volume down! Our lead guitarist said “that amplifier sounds great – I will have to get one of those”, until he realised it was the same old amp I used every week and it was actually the bass he was listening to! The gig on Saturday went really well. I used the Cortobass for the first two sets, and it was excellent! I went back to my Status for the last set, just to do a live comparison, and I have to say that whilst the sound was pretty similar through my Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout (I tend to use just a simple, warm sound), the Status was far more difficult to play! Thanks for all your work and artistry. It has been a pleasure doing business with you, and I hope in the near future to buy a second bass to keep her company!

He was very reluctant to order anything off the internet, but the fact is we are not going to stick you with something you don't want. 6C-032 Cortobass Standard - Fretless Texas Red Elm on Poplar body Black hardware & control plate CALIFORNIA She's here. She's everything I wanted, you promised, and more. I believe my playing has improved by hundreds of per cent in the week since she came. It's been a long wait, her brother being lost in UPS space and all, but she's so much better of a instrument than I am as a player, it'll take months before I can do her justice, and I think she will teach me more for years to come. (BTW I also sent my birthday cake, where Uma appears prominently. ) I'm working on a Harmony Central review, and it's hard to find the right words, but look for it. Thanks for supporting me during the long trauma of losing Elmo. You guys have been the greatest. I do believe that you would, as you promised, drive her out to California just to put her in my hands, but FedEx got her here, and, frankly, I just couldn't wait. 6C-037 CortoClassic Super lightweight Poplar body Chrome hardware & mint control plate CALIFORNIA So far I am very pleased with my CortoClassic. Quality of materials, finish, workmanship, assembly, case all excellent. Your neck design- semi-thick soft-v combined with narrow string spacing- works well for my picked bass guitar style of playing. Like any higher end stringed instrument should it responds very well to differences in hardness or softness of pick attack-even soft attack gives you a well defined solid note. Chording of any type well defined. Sounds great through my larger rig as it should, but even sounds good through my junky tiny practice amp. Tone control actually works throughout entire range; volume control/pickup sensitive enough to set up for pick and fingerstyle volume differences without touching the amp volume. For my playing style, uses and preferences this is the best thing I've played and well worth the money- a custom-quality bass for the price of a production model Fender American Series Jazz Bass at Guitar Center! 6C-039 CortoSupremo Rear-routed 5-piece Swamp Ash & figured Cherry body Gold hardware Custom Rosewood-on-Cherry knobs NEVADA Nice! Sounds, feels, plays & looks just as great as I knew it would! Will show her off at the upcoming 3rd Street Dance in downtown Carson City next Friday evening. Hopefully, I'll be able to get someone to snap a couple photos to share with you guys. Thank you for producing this playable work of art for me!!! ...problem with the Fender was that the Rock Maple neck was so much heavier than the body, that if I ever let go of the neck, the headstock would crash to the floor! Obviously, your design is much better thought-out and balances perfectly - all of the weight is right where it NEEDS to be. And the slightly shorter scale combined with the narrower J-bass style nut width makes it a joy to play. I love it! =gary=(VERY satisfied Birdsong customer) Read his review here |

The results speak for themselves but I had no doubt that I would receive anything but the best. Just spend a few minutes talking to the owners (Scott and Jamie): the owners obviously love what they are doing, and that love of music is reflected not only in the delivery of the final product but with ongoing communication with the customer all the way through the build process. I'm just beginning to explore the tonal characteristics of this bass but I am thoroughly thrilled with what I'm hearing right out of the box. I mainly play rock and blues and this bass has a very good growl. It punches through the mix well and exhibits no hum or other noise." (JEFF HAS SINCE ORDERED A SECOND BASS) |

6C-045 Cortobass Standard Rear-routed blackwashed wild Mahogany body Gold hardware MARYLAND Number 45 arrived last night, and it's hard to find the right words for how beautiful it is. It brings tears to my eyes; I feel like a new mother. As wonderful as it looked in the earlier pictures, it is much more so in person--the finish gleams, the wood glows, and the color shimmers like burnt sugar going to caramel. And as good as it looks, it feels and sounds even better. It sits exactly right, the fingerboard spacing is perfect, everything about it is smooth as silk. And the sound is amazing. I can hardly believe how good it makes a newbie like me sound; the music just pours out of it. Even on a little rumble amp the sound is so deep and rich you'd think it was on a much bigger system. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Jill |

6S-001 9-piece Walnut, Purpleheart, Maple & Ebony body 2-pickup version MISSOURI I play a multitude of diferent styles and this bass is able to handle all of them with ease. Matter of fact, it is replacing a custom built Mike Rowan Bass, a Rickenbacker 4001, and a Fender Jazz. Something that is shocking everyone I let try it out is that the bass is NOT using active electronics. It does not need to! It has all of the versatility of the Bartolini's in my Rowan, it has the growl of my Fender, and the zing of the Rick - and I can dial in any of these sounds. It is NOT a one-trick pony by any means. This is the first bass I have owned that does it all. Just the other day I had a pro recognize something I was aiming for. he said: "I can't believe you were able to nail down Les Claypool's sound and change so drastic in between all of your songs with ONLY the knobs on the bass!" I credit that not only to the brilliant design and making the best use of the components, but also to the fact that everything just WORKS so well on the bass Scott and Jamie from Birdsong are by FAR the best people in the world I have ever dealt with in regard to ANY product! 6S-005 Solid Zebrawood Rear routed with gold hardware IDAHO I just wanted to share something. Now that I've started taking my Zebrawood Sadhana to the weekly jams , I keep getting the same questions and comments. "Nice bass, who makes
that?" everyone asks. And they continue, "Wow,
what kind of wood is that? It's so cool !" "Bet you paid a lot for
that, eh?" And so it goes, time after time. BTW: Our lead player, who also plays great bass, took it for a ride while I ran the varitone. His word for word comment was, "WOW, I just played something real great". I said, "Yeah, you're not bad". He said, "No man, I mean your bass". I love this bass. Thanks, Dan |

| 6S-008 Mahogany body Blackwashed KANSAS This bass was hand-delivered to a decorated veteran recuperating from some health setbacks in a Kansas nursing home. To say he's thrilled to be playing again is an understatement; to say we're honored he chose us to build this bass for him is also an understatement. |

2004 "Eaglet" 24" scale Chambered Cherry body with Walnut top ... definitely not a “dead factory plank.” "The 24” scale neck fits comfortably in my hands and seems to fit my short fingers like some sort of reverse glove. The action is buttery." "The quality of your workmanship is exceeded only by the love you impart to your work and to all our lives. You are so right. The Eaglet will not only be a tool of music but an instrument of personal growth and exploration for me. Despite my degenerative arthritis I will be able to play guitar and commune with the flowers and consult with the rain for a while longer. You are a godsend! I now know why short scale guitars are not made by many. It’s so that you can make them, make one for me, and be the uniquely wonderful people that you are." Frank on his Custom "Eaglet" guitar, 2004 (It is us who give thanks for having folks like our clients who come through our lives and bless us with their presence and the opportunity to provide them with such a tool. Thank YOU, Frank!) |

2004 custom 25-1/2" scale Rosewashed Alder body Birdseye Maple neck with Ebony fretboard DiMarzio pickups Woodburned Roses & vines The gentleman's daughter liked pink, so that set the theme. When he saw it after completion, he said "You captured her! That guitar is her!" From what we heard, she was pretty happy when it was presented to her on Christmas... Update: Dad then ordered a guitar for himself! (see below) |

2006 custom 25-1/2" scale Maple neck, Brazilian Rosewood fretboard Wild blackwashed Mahogany body DiMarzio pickups "It's... epic." "Hey guys its Chris - I finally stopped pickin' long enough to realize I hadn't called to tell you how blown away I am. So... I'm blown away! Thank you so much. Awesome. Went over (a musician friend's) house and everybody just was beside themselves... no words, just awestruck." |
"...I really like the style of your
instruments i.e. the natural finishes and simplicity. It is really
refreshing to see and I always thought a short scale bass would sound good
and I finally have proof for the guys who argued with me."
"I think she is beautiful and that the workmanship is top-notch." (Cortobass)
"...can't wait to see whatever
models your churn out next. Perhaps
some more woodburning?
Every time I see that damned coyote
and feather I get all tingly in the
pants."
"This may seem a little strange, but I want to tell you how glad
I was when I stumbled onto your website. Almost every other company out
there claims to have a "no b.s." philosophy, but most people see
right through that. People recognize sincerity as well as insincerity, and
I can tell that you build your instruments out of desire to create
something useful, unique, and beautiful—you have a vision, not a
marketing plan. That's pretty refreshing, considering the focus-group bull
we have to put up with on a regular basis."

Original Blue Cheer guitarist Leigh Stephens comments on his 1998 custom guitar, a gift from me as payback for years of inspiration: "...sounds like anything I want it to sound like. Gigantic." (1999) "I wanted to let you know that I re-recorded all my guitar parts that were done with my Strat. It does not compare to the sound I can get with your guitar. I will have to get you to rework the Strat one of these days." (2004) Scott made it into the credits on Leigh's new CD, "High Strung / Low Key", being thanked "...for the amazingly large sounding guitar he made for me and the fan site he developed leighstephens.com." |

"4 thumbs way up! The guitar sounded fabulous
in rehearsal yesterday.
I kept looking up and seeing everyone smiling at me, so you get an
enthusiastic thumbs up from everyone." ~Dave Mitchell of Josefus on his re-worked Strat, Oct. '04 |
"Got it Friday. Nice job!!!! The tone is awesome, especially the "squak" that I can get when I put the selector switch and tone pot in the right position. The finish is gorgeous too. Again, thanks for the great work." ~ TJ of The Bluebloods |

"My Scott (or Birdsong?) is still doing fantastic. I've just now begun
to
fully embrace its most unique sound... that half-wah you get when
flipping
the (tone switch) up. With a good overdrive or fuzz it's absolutely amazing
for
soloing or some funk rhythm playing." ~ Matt, in a July 2004 Email about a 2000 custom guitar. |
